Advanced purification and recycling of yellow phosphorus tail gas

Brief introduction

China is the largest producer of yellow phosphorus in the world, with a total production capacity of about 1.8 million tons/year. Producing one ton of yellow phosphorus will generate 2,500~3,000 Nm3 of byproduct tail gas and yellow phosphorus tail gas mainly contains CO (~ 90 percent) and is a valuable raw material for carbonyl synthesis.

The composition of yellow phosphorus tail gas is complex and fluctuates a lot and its components are mutually interfered. And advanced purification of yellow phosphorus tail gas is a major technology in recycling it.

We have developed integrated technology for the advanced purification of yellow phosphorus tail gas by adsorption, involving a catalytic oxidation method, CO purification by PSA, and carbonyl synthesis (methyl formate, formic acid, or DMF and formamide).

We have an industrial demonstration unit for producing 20,000 tons of formic acid from yellow phosphorus tail gas in operation in Guizhou province.

Technical features

1.High degree of purification and low operating costs

The adsorber, catalyst, and process technology for removing the S, P, As and F compounds mainly by adsorption through the catalytic oxidation method ensures a high degree of purification of yellow phosphorus tail gas, and meets all the technical requirements for top-value utilization. It involves little investment and has low energy consumption and low operating costs, much lower than those involved in the production of CO from coal or natural gas.

2.Advanced, mature technology

The process is concise, safe, environmentally friendly, mature, and reliable, is highly automated, and has low energy consumption.

3.The technology for C1 chemical utilization is reliable

The purified CO is used to synthesize formic acid, DMF, acetic acid, and other bulk chemicals with a high degree of added value. The technology is mature, and the market demand is large, as are the benefits.

4.The technology is a leader in its field

The technology for the advanced purification of yellow phosphorus tail gas may serve as a model for the purification and utilization of calcium carbide furnace tail gas, silicon carbide tail gas, ferroalloy tail gas, and other CO-rich industrial vent gas, and it has a wide range of uses.

Technical indicators

After yellow phosphorus tail gas purification is complete, the level of purity of the resulting CO is no less than 98 percent, while the S, P, As, or F compound content of the CO is no more than 1ppm.
